What made you come to the United States?

John, Malaysia
The graduate programs here are the best in my field, I suppose. And the training also is just much better. I was in the UK before this. They have a shorter PhD program, but you don't get the sort of professional training that you get in the States. The programs are a lot shorter there. You basically go away for three years and come back with your dissertation. Here there is much more of a structure and training.

Abhinand, India
I came to the United States because I love learning and because the United States spends the most amount of money on higher education.

Stanislaw, Bulgaria
What made me come to the United States was money and nothing else...to get education and use it to get some money, and eventually stay here if I like or go back home if I don't like it. But having the American education will help me financially, not because I'm going to acquire that much knowledge but as a consequence. So, that's why I came. After I get education, I'll work a little bit, at least I can work legally for a year, that's what the law says, and see how it goes. If I can get another job which allows me to stay more longer here, probably I would do it. Of course, there are other factors like getting married or something like that. So, I don't know yet, but for sure I'm willing to work a little bit and eventually make a little profit since we're in a profit society.

Yunan, China
I came mostly for the education because they have the best college education in America, and you have more options and more freedom to choose what you want to be. Also, I want to be worldly more well-rounded, and just to see and explore the world when I'm young.

Mia, Finland
I came as an au pair first and worked for two years. I had a lot of friends and all things. So, legal way to stay here longer was to go to school. So, I did. And I've been here to get my Bachelor's. The reason why I stayed here was that you can really be free. You can wear what you want. Nobody really cares. And you can just melt into everybody else. Versus back home, everybody kind of is similar. And, if you are a little bit odd, people are going to look at you or something like that. Here it's not like that.

Takeyuki, Japan
I wanted to live in United States since I was a little kid. In Japan, we hear so many good things about the United States. English is an international language, so it's good to be able to use English too, right? That's one reason. And another reason, I've wanted to be a pilot since I was a little kid, and it's a lot easier to become a pilot in here than in Japan.

Why did you decide to come to the US?

basically school, but life over there back in south africa isn't that good. i mean job situation, school situation and stuff like that. and I had an opportunity to come here, so my best bet was to come here. it's actually hard to get a visa from there to come here..but i have some relatives living here and they offered me a chance to come, and i was like "yeah why not, i have nothing to loose". so, once i finished high school in africa, i came to college over here. it's also a new experience, so i decided to come.
