Yunan,
China
Teachers in China just want you to get in and get out of there and
sometimes you don't learn any stuff. You are just going through exams
and trying to memorize stuff. Versus here in my classroom, teachers
use different media and different methods to help you learn and you
actually learn how to apply your knowledge into the practical life. |

Abhinand,
India
Classroom and learning in India or in the Middle East is very different.
One of the big things is there's a lot more respect for authority
in India or in the Middle East but the thing is that's good and that's
not good, because over here there's less respect for authority, but
you get a chance to talk with a professor, to have lunch with a professor,
to listen to his ideas, and to give your ideas, so that's a good thing.
But on the not so good side, sometimes the students just don't respect
the professor, so they come late to class, they eat, they just do
whatever they want. So, there's a good and bad side. |

Mia,
Finland
Teachers and students are more buddy-buddy in classroom situations
here in the US. Back home we have usually a little bit more respect
for the instructor. I mean, you don't really become that tight. Here
it's like a different mentality that way. |

Xiaoxue,
China
Here in a class, you have to speak out. You have to be active, interact
with the group, interact with the teacher. So, it's a kind of different.
We, Chinese, are trying to be modest. So, even if you know the answer,
you don't speak out. But here, you are trying to say something. I
saw a lot of people just to speak out. Maybe they don't know the answer
but still they are trying to air their voice. So, the most important
adjustment I have done since I came is trying to air my voice. Trying
to express myself and trying to have more interaction with the instructor.
And talk more with the instructor, and also participate more in group
discussions because in my country we don't have that much group work. |
