What advice would you give to a new international student?

Yunan, China
I'd tell them to be prepared and be open-minded. And don't judge people around you and try to respect their culture because it's going to be really different. We don't see that much diversity in China and sometimes it can be overwhelming for a newcomer.

Abhinand, India
I would tell them to not stick with the same group, for example, like one of the things I did was I had Japanese roommates, Chinese roommates, American friends, American roommates, people who like soccer, people who like computers. So, my advice to people who are coming from other countries is come over here and don't stick in your own group because there's no point in doing that. Come over here and mix and learn about different things because that way you can relate to people better.

John, Malaysia
Be very careful about where you live and pay attention to where the university is because places and conditions vary a great deal from one place to another. It's a very large country. People overseas might tend to think "oh, it's just America" but there's a big difference between, say, Baltimore and Palo Alto. You need to be able to live in that place. You can't just go to a place because it's prestigious or something. You need a community. Otherwise, you are just going to live in your little hole, you will suffer and you won't do well.

Mia, Finland
I would say just talk to people with similar experiences. I mean, people who have been studying in the States for a couple of years and get different opinions and viewpoints. I think all the experience are going to be different. It's kind of different for me than it's going to be for you. Also, find out more about the American culture and the area where you are going to be living at.

Takeyuki, Japan
International students planning to come here should have a clear idea what they want to do and what they plan to achieve. They'll be living in a totally new world. It's exciting. If they don't have a good idea what they're going to do, it's easy to get lost and out of track.

Patrik, Sweden
Save up money enough to buy a car when you come here. It's really hard to get around without a car.

Do some research about the area you are going to be living in. If possible, try to visit the school and see how the neighborhood is like before moving there.

i see when japanese people come here, they usually hang out just with other japanese students. so, then they kind of loose the purpose of speaking english here. i'd tell them and other international students to try to hang out more with english speaking people, not just with people from your own home country.

i'd recommend coming here, especially in California is really fun. you won't regret because here is so much exposure to different cultures that is really interesting. knowing the language is really important. it's hard to go by without knowing English. try to study English as much as you can. i wouldn't like to tell too much negative things because if you come here, you'd seek for those things, expect them, and maybe look at everything differently. it's better to come fresh and have your own experiences.
